POWDER COATING
Powder coating - effective surface coating method
The powder coating method origins go back to 1940s. It is one of the most popular methods used for metal coating purposes. A correctly run process, in which chemical treatment plays a key role, simultaneously guarantees durability, adhesion and an aesthetically pleasing end result. A professionally executed powder coating service is perfectly suitable for aluminium, steel and galvanised workpieces.
What does powder coating consist in?
Powder coating is one of the most effective coating methods applied on various surfaces. It has been used for over 50 years. Powder coating processes use specialist powder coats to be uniformly applied all over a surface by means of the electrostatic spraying method. A surface subjected to powder coating is both exceptionally smooth and durable. It is characterised by excellent technological parameters.
How does a powder coating paint shop operate?
Powder coating involves spraying a powder coat on a surface, and then heating and curing it under correctly selected temperature conditions. Due to the fact that the whole process is controlled by specialist equipment, it is possible to apply a coat uniformly over the entire surface. Note also that this method is used mostly to coat metal surfaces, but its scope of application is much broader. It can also be used to coat wooden or glass surfaces, however, such services are not yet included in our offer.
POWDER COATING PROCESS STAGES

Preparing workpieces for coating
Chemical treatment plays a key role in the powder coating process. The first stage involves mechanical treatment aimed at removing all contamination and small material defects. During the chemical treatment process, metal workpieces are degreased and subjected to an etching process, after which degreasing and etching agents used are washed off successively with tap and demineralised water. Next, they are protected against corrosion or possible chipping resulting from final product surface roughness. Our company operates a fully automated washer used to clean metal surfaces, both mechanically and chemically. Our offer includes two chemical treatment types, i.e. chromate treatment using chromium (VI) and chromium-free treatment using the Oxsilan technology.
Coat application
The next production process stage involves applying a coat over a previously prepared surface. The coat in a form of powder is applied using the electrokinetic or electrostatic spraying method.. During the coating process, various types of powder coats can be applied (i.e. polyester, polyester-epoxy and epoxy coats).

Powder coating - electrostatic spraying
Powder coating involving the electrostatic spraying method requires using equipment creating the coat particle charging effect.
Then, the positively charged coated workpiece surface “attracts” coat particles which contain negative charges during spraying. It is possible due to constant voltage and current flowing through the system.

Coat curing
Powder coat curing is the last step of the process. To this end, a coated workpiece is placed in a powder coat oven. The temperature in this oven reaches approx. 190 degrees Celsius, and the coat is slowly melted and hardened. The curing stage lasts approx. 25 - 30 minutes for coats with standard thickness and properties.
Which materials can be powder coated?
The powder coating method comes with a very wide spectrum of applications. It is a perfect solution for such workpiece surfaces as:
- STEEL
- GALVANISED STEEL
- ALUMINIUM
Powder coating can be used for other surfaces, but in such a case it can be somewhat problematic, so, for now, it has not been included in our offer. Such applications involve surfaces made of such materials as:
- STAINLESS STEEL
- MAGNESIUM
- COPPER
- ZINC
- CAST IRON
- GLASS
- WOOD
- CERAMICS
- MDF BOARDS
It mostly results from the fact that these materials do not respond well to chemical treatment. It does not mean that coating such materials is impossible, however, the adhesion properties are quite poor, which would make the coat itself very fragile.
Note also that powder coated surfaces must undergo the heating stage. Therefore, they must be resistant to high temperatures ranging from 180 to 200 degrees Celsius.
Powder coating - key advantages
Powder coating is considered one of the most effective surface coating methods. It is only natural, as it offers a broad range of diverse advantages. The most important one consists in the fact that powder coats do not contain harmful solvent-based substances exerting negative impact not only on the environment, but also on human health. In addition to this, powder coating guarantees high efficiency (as compared to classic emulsion coats) and significantly lower powder consumption.
As a result, one may assume that the powder coating method is better, as it offers necessary cost efficiency. This is due, among other things, to the fact that powder coating equipment is designed to protect the powder against excessive wear.
Obtaining a perfectly smooth and uniform surface is one of the key advantages of the powder coating process. The powder gradually hardens when subjected to high temperatures and the surface is free of any deformations. Surfaces with a powder coat applied do not demonstrate any runs, and the colour applied is evenly distributed.
Powder coated surfaces can be glossy or matt, and the finish can be either smooth or structural. There is a myriad of possible effects, and matching a correct coat is never a problem.

Powder coating - key disadvantages
Powder coating requires great precision and experience of a paint shop operator plus specialist facilities and equipment. Any, even the smallest, mistake made during the workpiece preparation stage may have adverse impact on the final effect. Unfortunately, not all workpieces can be powder coated, as in some cases the Faraday cage phenomenon can occur, particularly when handling very complex parts.
Powder coating - our offer
The GELP powder coating paint shop is equipped with five state-of-the-art coating lines. The latest one was assembled in 2019. It is a horizontal automatic line with 7 m long oven.
Ovens in the remaining facilities are 5 m, 6 m, 7 m and 9 m long, respectively.
We coat aluminium, castings, derived alloys and steel - small- and large-sized workpieces with diverse design complexity. Note also that we are a member of the QUALIPOL association and hold the QUALICOAT certificates. In our paint shop, we have implemented a chemical treatment process using the reliable chromium VI.
We have been providing powder coating services since 1992. The GELP powder coating paint shop offers a wide variety of coat colours as per RAL. We also apply coats with special effects (fine and coarse textures and metallic effects). Our operation processes are extremely flexible. We ensure rapid paint colour changeovers - even several ones during a day.
Our cutting-edge technology enables us to significantly enhance performance and shorten lead times.
